What's different about Copperas Cove
A different county and different ground. Copperas Cove is in southern Coryell County, not Bell County, and its city limits reach southwest into Lampasas County, according to the Texas State Historical Association. TSHA describes Coryell County as plateaus and grasslands in the Grand Prairie region, where "soils vary widely" but most are alkaline with limestone underneath. That's a different setting from the deep Blackland clay around Temple. Shallow rock and pockets of clay can sit side by side, so foundation movement here can be uneven and hard to predict from the street.
A town built around the railroad, then the Army. The community's post office opened in March 1879 as "Coperas Cove," named for the mineral taste of a nearby spring. When the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway came through in 1882, residents moved the town about two miles northeast to be near the tracks. The spelling changed to Copperas Cove in 1901.
Fort Hood-era growth. Copperas Cove had only 356 residents in the 1940s before Camp Hood opened. TSHA's figures show it growing to 4,567 by 1960, 19,469 by 1980 and 29,592 by 2000 as the post, now Fort Hood again since June 2025, became permanent. Census Bureau estimates put the city at about 36,700 in 2020 and about 40,100 in July 2025. Most homes here were built during that long expansion, from the 1950s on.
