Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

Foundation repair in Harker Heights usually means piers under a slab or shim work under a pier-and-beam floor, on soils that change lot to lot. To get started, send a request with the form.

KilleenFoundation.com is a referral website, not a foundation repair company or a charity. We send your request to one independent local foundation repair company that serves the Harker Heights area. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. Pricing and scheduling come from that company.

What's different about Harker Heights

A young city. Harker Heights began in 1957, when two landowners, Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern, started subdividing and selling lots, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Residents voted to incorporate on September 24, 1960, and named the city for Kern. In December 1988 the city annexed the 2,200-acre Comanche Hills utility district, adding almost 3,500 people. So most Harker Heights homes date from 1957 or later, built in waves as the city grew.

Still growing. Census Bureau estimates put the population at about 33,100 in 2020 and about 35,200 in July 2025. TSHA describes Harker Heights as a bedroom community whose residents mostly work in Killeen, at Fort Hood or elsewhere in the county.

West-side soils. Harker Heights lies in the western part of Bell County, just east of Killeen. TSHA describes the county west of the Balcones fault as having light to dark loamy and clayey soils with limy subsoils, and shallow, stony soils in places. Clay and rock can sit close together, so two houses on the same street may move differently, or one may not move at all.

Hills and runoff. TSHA lists Stillhouse Hollow Lake among the recreation areas open to residents. On sloped lots, check where water goes after a heavy rain; runoff that collects against one side of a foundation keeps that side's soil wetter than the rest.

National guides checked in October 2026 put most foundation repairs at about $2,224 to $8,134, and piering at about $1,000 to $3,000 per pier (This Old House). A Harker Heights company sets its own price after it sees the house, and the pier count drives the total. See the foundation repair cost guide for every line item, including permits and engineer's reports.

Permits in Harker Heights

The city's Building Official FAQ quotes the building code: any owner, agent or contractor who wants to "construct, enlarge, alter, repair" a building, or to alter or repair any structural system, must first get a permit from the Building Official. The same page says permits are generally not needed for maintenance and minor repairs, and to contact the Building Official if you're unsure.

The city's fee schedule for October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 sets a penalty for work begun without the necessary permits: $250 or 100 percent of the permit fee, whichever is greater, on top of the permit fee itself.

The Building Official's office is at 305 Millers Crossing, (254) 953-5600.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for foundation repair in Harker Heights?

The city's Building Official FAQ quotes the building code: anyone who wants to alter or repair a building or its structural system must first get a permit. It also says maintenance and minor repairs generally don't need one. Foundation repair is structural work, so call the Building Official at (254) 953-5600 to confirm before work starts.

What happens if work is done without a permit in Harker Heights?

The city's fee schedule for October 2026 through September 2027 says work started without the necessary permits is subject to a penalty of $250 or 100 percent of the permit fee, whichever is greater, on top of the permit fee. Make sure the contractor pulls the permit before work begins.

Can I get a free foundation inspection in Harker Heights?

Some foundation companies advertise free evaluations. Whether the company we refer you to charges for one is up to that company, so ask when it calls. If you want an opinion from someone who isn't selling the repair, you can hire an independent Texas-licensed professional engineer (P.E.).
